Crash course from SW Motech

Low speed and static tumbles are not only embarrassing, they can be very costly; damaged engine casings and bodywork can disrupt or even halt journeys completely, and can be expensive to repair or replace. More commonplace during winter months, when wet leaves, frost and ice can cause riders to lose footing and tyres to lose traction, it is advisable for any rider to take precautions by fitting crash bars.

Constructed from heavy-duty steel, SW-Motech Crash Bars form a protective barrier around the areas liable to damage caused by low speed falls, and can help protect casings and fairings during impacts with other vehicles and in slides and falls at higher speeds.

Although tough, they’re lightweight and unobtrusive, and each set is tailor made to fit the relevant machine; so they add minimal width. In addition, Crash Bar and components are sandblasted and powder coated to help prevent corrosion and blend with the machine’s styling. As well as providing protection, Crash bars are also useful for mounting accessories such as auxiliary fog lamps; ideal for extra safety during the winter riding season.

SW-Motech kits normally require no modifications or cutting of bodywork to fit, and come complete with all the required mounting materials and instructions. New models covered for this winter include the Ducati 1200 Multistrada (£148.06 including VAT), Honda CBF1000 (£128.31), Kawasaki Z1000 (£138.19), Triumph Street Triple (£138.19) and Yamaha Super Tenere 1200 (£157.93). A handy addition from KEiS

Heated clothing specialists, KEiS, have added Heated Grips to their winter 2010/11 collection; ideal for those planning to ride through the coldest season.

Designed to provide continual, controllable warmth, KEiS Heated Grips reduce the need for bulky, insulated gloves, which can impair control and feel - crucial for winter riding, where conditions require careful operation of the throttle, clutch and front brake.

Each set comes with a combined on/off and temperature control switch, which is easily operated with gloved hands, and can be handlebar or bodywork mounted for quick operation. There are two temperature settings, so riders can tailor the heat level to the conditions.

The Grip surface is designed to offer control and feel, and is resistant to cracking. Both this and the electrical components are manufactured to resist moisture and low temperatures too, for a long service life. In addition, the switch has relay protection - to reduce the risk of shorting - and is tested to more than 100,000 usages for reliability.

Suitable for most machines with 7/8 inch handlebars, KEiS Heated Grips come complete with everything needed to install, require no glue to fix in place, and have open ends to accommodate bar ends where required.

KEiS Heated Grips are part of the complete range of KEiS Heated Apparel and accessories, and are priced £49.98 including VAT. Call 01256 704909 or visit www.keisapparel.co.uk for more information.

XENA's Bullett with Bite

XENA Security has developed a range of stainless steel U-locks to complement its leading alarmed disc-locks.

Like the disc-locks, these ultra high security U-locks are made with high-grade materials and employ innovative design. The name Bullett derives from the unique locking mechanism, which is housed inside a removable "bullet" shape unit - no tools are required as the key operates the locking function and provides access for maintenance, or to re-key.

Constructed from high-grade stainless, inert gas-hardened and chro-moly steels, the 18mm shackle resists cutting and drilling, as well as attacks using an ice spray, a substance that thieves commonly use to render cheaper materials brittle and thus easier to crack.

The double-locking mechanism secures both ends of the shackle and the U-bar is designed to resist attempts to twist it open in either direction, in the unlikely event that one side is cut free.

Like all XENA disc-locks, the Bullett locks use a key and barrel that is manufactured in-house, with 250,000 possible key combinations and a pickproof drill-resistant key entry.

Tested and approved by independent European bodies (e.g. SRA in France and VAT in Finland) XENA locks are highly resistant to the elements to provide years of trouble-free service.

Available in two sizes - 108mm x 270mm (internal loop width) at £75 and 108mm x 310mm at £115 - XENA Bullett locks are available from Motohaus Powersports, T, 01256 704909 / www.motohaus.com

Keis squad turns on the heat

Winter temperatures in the UK can drop to -10 °C (14 °F) by night and in the day rarely rise above 15 °C (59 °F), which makes it challenging to stay warm while riding a motorcycle, no matter how many layers are worn. Hands and feet will feel cold more quickly in low temperatures, as the body restricts blood flow from the extremities in order to maintain core temperature. Heated clothing provides a permanent solution.

Designed specifically for motorcyclists, KEIS heated apparel uses the latest Encapsulated Element Technology to provide reliable, even heating. For this season the Keis bodywarmer has been updated with extra power sockets and new under gloves introduced too.

Manufactured from light weight stretch material, KEIS inner gloves (RRP £49.99) are thin enough to wear under motorcycle gloves without restricting movement. Like all Keis garments they come with a fused supply lead designed to be connected across a 12v vehicle battery. In addition the updated X5 Bodywarmer (RRP £99.99) now has integral Auxiliary power sockets to allow convenient connection of Gloves and Insoles (RRP £44.99).

Powering the Gloves and/or Insoles via the Bodywarmer reduces the amount of cabling and gives the rider the option of using rechargeable Lithium Ion Battery Packs, instead of the motorcycle battery, allowing use both on and off the bike.

Available in a range of sizes from XS-XL, call 01256 704909 or visit www.keisapparel.co.uk for more information.

Xtra secure XENA XGA anchor

Research suggests that it is common for motorcycle thieves to pick up machines and remove them in a van, eliminating the need to defeat locks and chains and other ‘on-bike' security devices at the scene*. Therefore it is crucial to lock machines to a fixed point or object, but it can be tricky finding somewhere suitable or getting a bike/scooter close enough to wrap a chain around it.

The new XGA Single-Bolt Ground Anchor from XENA provides a Sold Secure** gold-rated anchor point that is simple to fit and requires minimal space. Quick and easy to install, the XGA requires just one bolt to fix it in place; yet is just as strong as anchors using a multi-bolt fitting. It can be fixed to a wall or floor, inside or outside, and employs a ‘fold flat' design so it won't get in the way when not in use; its low profile design means it can also be ridden over easily, so the XGA can be installed in narrow passageways or on a garage floor.

Using the XGA is just as easy; thanks to its unique ‘swivel' design - the base rotates through 360 degrees - a chain or lock can be passed through the shackle without having to manoeuvre the motorcycle into position.

The swivel design also makes it incredibly difficult to get a purchase with a cutting or levering device and combined with a shackle thickness of 21mm it will resist even the most determined of thieves.

The XGA is so tough that it has been awarded the Gold Standard by SoldSecure, the highest grade possible from the independent body administered by the Master Locksmiths Association.

The XGA series ground anchor costs just £50.00 (including VAT) and is ideal for securing motorcycles, trailers, quad bikes, jetskis and more. For further details call Motohaus Powersports Ltd. on 01256 704909 or visit www.motohaus.com

Gold disc for XENA

Motorcycle and scooter riders can now benefit from SoldSecure Gold standard theft protection whenever they ride, thanks to XENA's new compact X2 V-Lock. Measuring only 85x56x65mm, and weighing just 679g, the X2 is compact and light enough to be stashed in bike-mounted luggage, a backpack, or under the seat, so it can be on-hand whenever and wherever the machine is parked.

Despite the compact size and low weight, the X2 is exceptionally tough. Constructed from high-grade stainless steel, it repels drill and hammer attacks, and is also 100% corrosion resistant. Its unique V shape provides a high strength-to-weight ratio, and effectively doubles the work for any potential thief because both sides must be overcome to open it. Both the body and lock barrel of the X2 are ice-spray proof too.

The 14mm double-locking, hardened-steel locking pin is secured with XENA's maximum security key and barrel (which has 250,000 possible key combinations and is pick proof), placing the XENA X2 V-Lock firmly in the SoldSecure Gold category.

SoldSecure is an independent body funded by UK insurers, and administered by the Master Locksmiths Association. Gold is their highest standard and security devices must withstand picking, drilling, slide hammering, sawing, a ‘wedging test' and a torque test to qualify.

The X2 V-Lock is available in yellow or stainless steel finishes priced at £21.00 and £24.01 respectively. For further details call Motohaus Powersports Ltd. on 01256 704909 or visit www.motohaus.com

XENA chain links to Gold Standard

Having a motorcycle stolen is not only a devastating experience, it can also be very costly: insurance excess payments, loss of no claims bonus, and in some cases expensive repair bills if the bike is recovered. Investing in security devices can save the heartache, inconvenience and costs incurred from theft, but many riders can be put off by the high purchase price of quality equipment - around half of UK riders don't lock their machine at all*.

Prices for XENA's new XSU69 lock and chain start at £100 (for 1.1m length) and both lock and chain are tested and approved to the SoldSecure Gold Standard**, so riders can benefit from the highest quality security devices without paying top prices.

Constructed from high-grade stainless, inert gas-hardened and chro-moly steel, the padlock repels drill and hammer attacks and is also 100% corrosion resistant. Its 18mm chrome steel U-Bar features an Anti-Twist Shackle, designed to resist attempts to rotate it open in either direction, even if one side is cut free. And with 250,000 possible key combinations XENA's specially developed maximum security key and barrel is pick proof.

Complementing the padlock is XENA's ultra high security chain. Available in 1.1m, 1.5m and 2m versions, it is manufactured from high-grade alloy steels and is three-stage case hardened to give maximum possible resistance to saws and bolt cutters. Fitted with a durable woven sleeve to help protect the bike from damage, it is also supplied with a handy bag for storage when not in use.

XENA is committed to ensuring its entire product range can be relied upon to protect vulnerable and valuable machines, and submits all devices to independent test across the world, including SoldSecure (UK), Classe SRA (France), ART (Netherlands) and VAT (Finland). For details of their compete range call Motohaus Powersports on 01256 704909 or visit www.motohaus.com

See the Doctor to prevent bugs spreading

Insects can really bug motorcyclists. These unfortunate creatures get splattered across the front of a vehicle and can cause severe damage to unprotected surfaces, particularly front forks, affecting plastic parts like fairings and screens. Even if treated quickly, bug-splat can be difficult to shift, so German cleaning specialists Sdoc100 decided that prevention was better than cure.

SDoc100 Insect Protector prevents insects and dirt from adhering to surfaces - permanently. To apply, ensure that the bike is clean then spray the product sparsely and evenly over the entire front of the motorcycle - headlight, screen and all painted, plastic and metal parts. Wait for about 3 minutes (without letting the spray dry) and wipe away with a clean, soft and lint-free cotton or microfibre cloth. Simple; and it makes the motorcycle easier to clean too, minimising the risk of insect corrosion.

Sdoc100 Insect Protector is compatible with wax polishes and retails at £12.95 for a 300ml can. Information on the the complete range of Sdoc100 premium care products can be found at www.sdoc100.co.uk or call 01256 704909. See the video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrMQ4sTv3K8

Remember, if it doesn't say Sdoc100 it isn't from Germany’s No1…

Notes - Do not use on helmet visors as, in certain circumstances, there could be a glare hazard.
